The Nebular Environment and Enigmatic Hard X - ray Emission of the Hot DO White Dwarf KPD 0005 + 5106

چکیده
We have detected an ionized nebula around the hot DO white dwarf KPD0005+5106, and used the [O III]/Hα ratios and nebular velocities to separate this nebula from the background H II region of AO Cas. The angular size of the [O III] nebula of KPD0005+5106 is∼ 3. The velocity of this nebula is similar to those of the local interstellar H I gas and the interstellar/circumstellar absorption lines in UV spectra of KPD0005+5106, but has a large offset from those of the stellar photospheric lines. The mass of the ionized nebula, ∼ 70 M⊙, indicates that it consists of interstellar material and that the velocity offset between the star and the ambient medium should not be interpreted as a wind outflow. We have also analyzed the ROSAT PSPC observation of KPD0005+5106 to determine its hard X-ray luminosity. Using the LX/Lbol relation for late-type stars and the lack of obvious near-IR excess of KPD0005+5106, we exclude the possible existence of a binary companion with coronal activity. Without a wind outflow, the presence of stellar O VIII emission requires that X-rays at energies greater than 0.871 keV are present in the vicinity of KPD0005+5106. Discovery of photospheric Ca X emission lines in the far - UV spectrum of the hottest known white dwarf ( KPD 0005 + 5106 ) ⋆
For the first time, we have identified photospheric emission lines in the far-UV spectrum of a white dwarf. They were discovered in the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer spectrum of the hot (Teff ≈ 200 000 K) DO white dwarf KPD 0005+5106 and they stem from extremely highly ionized calcium (Ca X λλ 1137, 1159 Å). Their photospheric origin is confirmed by non-LTE line-formation calculations....

The photospheric emission of a white dwarf (WD) is not expected to be detectable in hard X-rays or the mid-IR. Hard X-ray (∼1 keV) emission associated with a WD is usually attributed to a binary companion; however, emission at 1 keV has been detected from three WDs without companions: KPD 0005+5106, PG 1159, and WD 2226−210. The origin of their hard X-ray emission is unknown, although it has be...
متن کاملIdentification of Ne lines in H - deficient ( pre - ) white dwarfs : a new tool to constrain the temperature of the hottest stars ⋆ ⋆ ⋆
For the first time, we have identified Ne absorption lines in far-UV spectra of the hottest known (Teff ∼150 000 K) hydrogendeficient (pre-) white dwarfs of spectral type PG1159. They are of photospheric origin and can be matched by synthetic non-LTE line profiles. We also show that a number of UV and optical emission lines in these stars can be explained as being photospheric Ne feat...
متن کاملFe Kα line in hard X-ray emitting symbiotic stars
The 6.4 keV iron emission line is typically created by irradiation of the neutral (or low ionized) iron by a hard X-ray source. Whereas the 6.7 and 7.0 keV emission lines are mainly produced by photoionization and collisional excitation in hot plasma, the 6.4 keV fluorescence line is typically a signature of either reflection from an accretion disc or absorption. We have surveyed the emission u...
متن کاملThe X–ray Spectrum of the Dwarf Nova SS Cyg in quiescence and outburst
We reanalyse archival GINGA and ASCA X–ray data from SS Cyg in both quiescence and outburst, using multi–temperature plasma models for the continuum and line emission, together with their reflection from the X–ray illuminated white dwarf and accretion disk. Reflection is clearly detected in all the spectra, but its contribution is larger in the softer X–ray spectra seen in outburst than in quie...
